Surf lessons in Santa Catalina, Veraguas — Panama

Nobody forgets their first wave.

Most people stand up during their very first lesson. We teach a maximum of two students per instructor, and your instructor gets in the water with you — nobody shouts instructions at you from the shore.

We only teach when the tide is right for learning, which usually means one window in the morning and one in the afternoon. The catch: the tide moves a little later every day, so the lesson is not always at the same hour. On one date it might start at 7am and on another at 9am. Send us your date and we tell you the exact time for that day on WhatsApp.
Beginner surf lesson at Playa Estero, Santa Catalina: a student standing on the board
Playa Estero, the beach where the beginner lessons happen. Black sand, and a wave that forgives.

Two students per instructor. Never three.

It is not a sales tactic, it is arithmetic.

  1. 2students per instructor, in the water. Never three
  2. 6instructors on the team
  3. 12people per window if we all go in

Bigger groups than that we split between the morning window and the afternoon one. The one thing we never do is put three students with one instructor, no matter how full the day is. Write a few days ahead and we will fit you in: the tide decides the hours, and some days it only opens one good window.

What actually happens in that hour

One hour in total: ten minutes of instruction on the sand and fifty minutes in the water.

  1. The first 10 minutes, on the sandHow to lie on the board, where your feet go, how to stand up, and what to do when you fall. You practise standing up on the sand first, so you are not trying it for the very first time out in the water.
  2. The next 50 minutes, in the waterYour instructor goes in with you and pushes you into the first waves. After each wave he corrects one thing. Because there are only two students with him, the waves are shared between two people instead of six, so you are in almost constant motion instead of waiting in line. Most students manage to stand up on the board during this first lesson.
  3. As you walk outHe tells you what to work on and whether you are ready for a wave that has not broken yet. If you come back the next day, you carry on from there.

Lessons and prices

Both prices are per person. You pay $10 up front to hold your spot, it comes off the price, and the rest you pay in cash on the sand.

Surf lesson

$45per person, one hour

Two students per instructor. A soft-top board with leash, and your instructor in the water with you. The hour is split into ten minutes of instruction on the sand and fifty minutes surfing.

Only $5 more

Private lesson

$50per person, one hour

Your instructor goes in with you and nobody else. Every wave is yours and so is every correction. This is the one we suggest if you have never stood on a board, or if the ocean makes you nervous.

Two students per instructor. Almost anywhere else, a lesson with only two students is sold as semi-private and costs a good deal more.

Coming as a group? There are six of us, so we can take up to twelve people in one window. Tell us how many you are in the form and we work out a group price.

What you get, what you bring

Included in every lesson

  • A soft-top board sized to you, with leash
  • An instructor in the water with you the whole hour
  • Ten minutes of instruction on the sand, then fifty in the water
  • A tide window picked for you, so you surf when the beach is actually working

Bring with you

  • Water. You can buy it at the beach, but it costs a lot more there, so bring your own
  • Sunscreen, and put it on before you come down
  • A rash guard or a t-shirt you can surf in. We do not lend them
  • Swimwear you can actually move in
  • A towel, and cash to pay the rest of the lesson. There is one ATM in town and sometimes it has no cash in it

Who these lessons are for

Never surfed

You do not need to be fit or young. You do need to be comfortable in water over your head, because you will fall in it. We teach on the sand first and stay next to you the whole session.

Kids and families

From seven years old, in water they can stand in. We can teach a parent and a child in the same slot so nobody waits on the beach alone.

Standing up already

We work on turning, reading the wave and where to sit to wait for it. And if you are ready for the point break at La Punta, we will say so and take you there.

Why this is safe

An arm away

With two students, an instructor never loses sight of either of you and can reach you in time. With six in the water, he cannot.

A beginner beach

Playa Estero has no rocks in the impact zone. The wave breaks on sand.

A soft board

Soft-top foam. If it hits you, it does not cut you.

We do not go out under a storm

If there is lightning or thunder, the lesson is off. No lesson is worth that risk.

How booking works

  1. Send the formA few days ahead is best: there are two windows a day and they fill up.
  2. We check the tideWe reply on WhatsApp with the exact hour and who is teaching you.
  3. Send $10Per person, by PayPal or Wise. We send you the instructions.
  4. You surfWe meet on the sand at Playa Estero and you pay the rest there, in cash.

Who gives the lesson

There are six of us, and you know which one is teaching you before you arrive. There is no booking system on the other end of that WhatsApp, there is a person.

One instructor for every two students

Every booking is assigned to one instructor and he stays with you for the whole lesson. Two students per instructor in the water, never three. Four of you means two instructors go in, six means three, and so on.

You know who is waiting before you arrive

When we confirm your time we also tell you who is teaching that day. Nobody walks onto the beach looking for a stranger.

Several of our instructors have spent years surfing and living in Santa Catalina, and some of them have competed nationally and internationally.

The $10 that holds your spot

We do not ask you for a single dollar until we have checked the tide for your date and told you the hour. If the tide does not work that day, you find out before you pay anything.

Then, and only then, the deposit: $10 per person. It is not an extra charge, it comes off the price of the lesson. We ask for it because once your hour is confirmed we set aside an instructor and a board for you, and stop offering that slot to anybody else.

PayPal

How almost everyone pays it. Works from any country, takes a minute, and you keep the receipt.

Pay the $10 deposit

Wise

If you already have a Wise account it works too. Ask us on WhatsApp and we send you the payment link, then send us the screenshot.

$10 each if you are more than one. If we end up cancelling for lightning or thunder, it comes back to you the same day, in full, without you having to ask.

Where we meet

Playa Estero, Santa Catalina: black sand at low tide, where the surf lessons happen
Playa Estero at low tide. Five minutes on foot from the main street.

We meet you on the sand at Playa Estero.

We do not have a shop. Lessons happen on Playa Estero, the beginner beach in Santa Catalina: black sand, no rocks in the impact zone, and a five minute walk from the main street of town.

When we confirm your time we send you the exact spot on the sand over WhatsApp, so you are not wandering the beach looking for us.

Questions people ask before booking

How much does a surf lesson in Santa Catalina cost?

A group lesson is $45 per person and a private one is $50, both an hour long, board and instructor included. Two students per instructor, never three. You pay $10 up front to hold the spot and the rest in cash on the sand.

Do I need to bring my own board?

No. A soft-top board of the right size for your weight and height comes with the lesson, and so does the leash. If you already own a board and would rather use it, bring it and tell us.

Do you teach children?

Yes, from seven years old, in water they can stand in. A responsible adult has to be on the beach during the lesson. We can teach an adult and a child in the same slot so nobody waits alone.

How far ahead should I book?

Two or three days is enough to be sure of a spot. There are normally two windows a day, and each one depends on how many instructors are free, since we only put two students with each. In high season they fill up. If you are already in town, write anyway: sometimes there is room for the same day or the next one.

Why can't you give me a fixed start time?

Because the beach only works for beginners at certain tides, and the tide moves a little later every day. So the good hours are different on every date: one day the morning window opens at 7, the next at 8. There are normally two windows, morning and afternoon, and some days only one. Tell us your date and we give you the exact hour for that day.

Do you provide water, sunscreen or a rash guard?

No to all three. There is water for sale at the beach but it is expensive, so bring your own. Put your sunscreen on before you walk down. And bring a rash guard or a t-shirt you can surf in, we do not lend them. We bring the board, the leash and the instructor.

When is the best time of year to learn?

Any month works for beginners. December to April is dry and sunny with smaller, cleaner waves, which is the easier learning window. May to November brings rain in the afternoon and bigger swell, so lessons move to the calmest window of the day and to the most protected corner of the beach.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You need to be comfortable in water deeper than you are tall. You do not need to swim well. The board floats, you wear a leash, and your instructor is within arm's reach the whole class.

What if I can't stand up?

Most people do, inside the first hour, on a soft-top in the small whitewater at Estero. If you are one of the ones who doesn't, we tell you what is going wrong instead of pretending the class went great. The second lesson is usually where it clicks.

What if it rains?

Rain does not cancel a lesson, and neither does grey sky. Lightning and thunder do, because nobody should be holding a board in the water under a storm. That is the one case where the deposit comes back in full.

Can I get the deposit back?

If we cancel for lightning or thunder, yes, the full $10 comes back to you the same day and you do not have to ask. If it is your plans that change, we do not send the money back in cash, because that board and that hour were held for you. But do not write it off either: message us and we will look for a way to fit you in. We would much rather see you in the water than keep ten dollars.

How do I pay?

Like this: $10 per person up front by PayPal or Wise, and the rest in cash on the sand. On a $45 lesson that is $35 there; on a $50 private one it is $40. Nothing is charged when you send the form: we only ask for the deposit once we have agreed on a day and an hour.

Before you send anything

  • $0 todayThe form charges you nothing. We only ask for the deposit once we have agreed on a day and an hour.
  • LightningThe one thing that cancels a class. If we call it off for lightning or thunder, the deposit comes straight back.
  • Two at a timeTwo students per instructor in the water. Most schools put four or six on one.
  • Two languagesWe teach in Spanish and in English.

Request your lesson

Nothing is charged now. We answer on WhatsApp within the hour with the tide window for your date, and only then ask for the $10 that holds your spot.

If the student is a minor, a responsible adult has to be on the beach during the lesson.

Nunca has surfeado

Si te pega, no te corta.

No necesitas nadar bien.

¿Y si no logro pararme?

  • $0 hoyEl formulario no te cobra nada.
